Taxes & International Fees

Taxes on orders delivered in Canada
British Columbia's HST of 12% will be added to all gift baskets delivered within B.C. This tax applies to both the gift basket and delivery charges.

The tax is determined by the delivery destination. Deliveries to ON, NL, and NB will have 13% HST; NS will have 15% HST; AB, SK, MB, QC, PE, NT, NU, and YT will be charged 5% GST.

Taxes or Duties on orders delivered to the US:
When your gift is exported to the United States, your gift is exempt from Canadian taxes.

Your gift may be inspected by US Customs and they may assess duty for the products contained in your gift. Actions taken by US Customs are beyond our control and may delay the delivery of your gift. We are unable to anticipate whether your gift will attract duties which may be charged by the US Customs Service. To reduce the potential for Customs delays and duties being assessed, our export documents clearly outline the contents and retail value of all shipments and we clearly state on all documentation that this is “An Unsolicited Gift”.

We also include, in the delivery fees charged for US shipments, a documentation fee (see shipping chart for amount). US Customs requires a Commercial Invoice for each shipment, which we complete on your behalf and one day prior to the shipment we are required to complete an on-line Prior Notice of Entry for all food gifts. The time required to complete this documentation is substantial, but we’ve developed the expertise and on-line accounts necessary to complete the correct paperwork, which ensures your gift is delivered to US recipients in a timely manner.

Unless you advise otherwise, our waybills for gifts being sent to the US always indicate US Duty and Taxes will be paid by the Shipper. Prior to shipment of your gift to the US, we will ask you to confirm, via e-mail or fax, your acceptance of any additional charges that may be assessed. If Mad About Food receives an invoice for an assessment of duties and/or taxes by US Customs or the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) for your gift, we will charge the credit card you provided for the order and provide a statement outlining the charges, including a copy of the Broker’s invoice. Please note that Customs Brokerage charges may be an additional half or more of the cost of your gift, depending upon the gift’s value and contents included.

Orders delivered to International Destinations:
When your gift is exported from Canada to another country, your gift is exempt from Canadian taxes. However, duty for products received may apply. We are unable to anticipate whether your gift may attract duties which may be charged by the Customs Service in the recipient’s country. Our export documents clearly outline the contents and retail value of all shipments and we clearly state on all documentation that this is “An Unsolicited Gift”.

Unless you advise otherwise, our courier waybills for gifts sent overseas always indicate US Duty and Taxes will be paid by the Shipper. (Please note that international shipments sent via Canada Post do not include this provision and solely ask for a declaration of the contents and an indication of gift or not.) Prior to shipment of your gift via overseas courier, we will ask you to confirm, via e-mail or fax, your acceptance of any additional customs or duty charges that may be assessed. If Mad About Food receives an invoice for an assessment of duties and/or taxes by for your gift, we will charge the credit card you provided for the order and provide a statement outlining the charges, including a copy of the Broker’s invoice. Please note that these additional charges could be an additional half or more of the cost of your gift, depending upon the gift’s value and contents included.
